Reliably seal stand-up pouches with ultrasonics

Success story of SN Maschinenbau GmbH

Reliable sealing of flexible pouch packaging with ultrasonic technology

SN Maschinenbau GmbH & Herrmann Ultraschall

For almost 30 years, SN, the world market leader for horizontal rotary machines based in Wipperfürth, Germany, and Herrmann Ultraschall have been working together successfully on ultrasonic sealing of flexible pouch packaging, such as stand-up pouches. SN uses Herrmann's special sealing technology especially in applications such as wet pet food, liquids, sauerkraut, and hot peppers.

The collaboration began in 1996 with a request for reliable sealing technology for stand-up pouches containing clinical food products. The technical challenge at the time was sealing under contamination in combination with high cycle rates. Thermal welding processes were increasingly reaching their limits, while ultrasonic sealing technology was able to play to its strengths.

Close contact ensures mutual success

Over the past three decades, several innovations have been successfully launched on the market. The interpolation sealing of valves and dosing nozzles or the continuous zipper sealing for sealing a resealable zipper in a continuous film unwinding process are just two examples from the companies' shared history.

Close contact with SN has always been a guarantee of mutual success, as Heiko Pasker, Regional Sales Director at Herrmann Ultraschall, recalls. “Thanks to direct communication, all objectives were always achieved effectively.”

“Extensive testing and verification of the sealing tools and parameters in advance was always the key to smooth start-up at the end customer's site,” explains Olaf Clemens, CEO/Owner of SN.

“Herrmann's many years of expertise and experience in the field of ultrasonic sealing technology have made an immense contribution to the success of the projects. It is worth emphasizing the close cooperation with Herrmann Ultraschall,“ continues Olaf Clemens.

”Technical problems and challenges were identified at an early stage and solved sustainably as a team,” adds Heiko Pasker.

The integration of the ultrasonic components into the customer's machine, as well as testing and acceptance by the end customer in the production environment, always went smoothly. “We particularly appreciate the open communication and partnership-based solution finding when it comes to technical challenges in our cooperation with Herrmann Ultraschall,” summarizes Olaf Clemens.

Ultrasonics in action

  • Continuous motion rotary machine
  • Forming, filling and sealing of stand-up pouches
  • Food, pet food & beverages
  • High hygienic standards
  • Huge flexibility
  • Rapid changeover
  • Ultimate filling accuracy
  • Sealing reliability
  • Boasts an extremely low rejection rate

Many ultrasonic sealing innovations to come

The result of this strong and long-standing cooperation between SN and Herrmann Ultraschall are customized HFFS or HFS pouch packaging machines with maximum production speed, maximum reliability, and consistently high pouch quality with ultrasonic sealing technology from Herrmann. A recent highlight is the combination of sealing the tight and cosmetic seal in a single ultrasonic module, the TSM-COS. Advantages include the elimination of thermal sealing stations on the machine and the associated reduction in energy consumption.

For all applications involving Herrmann's ultrasonic sealing technology, customers receive joint consulting and technical solutions are developed. Standard solutions are rare, which is why we work in partnership with our customers to advise them on the best overall solution in terms of technology and economy. SN customizes the pouch packaging machine to meet the individual requirements of its customers.

There will be no shortage of innovations in the future – we are currently working intensively on continuous ultrasonic sealing of top seals in the SN Continuous Motion Series. This process opens up completely new possibilities for sealing stand-up pouches and marks the next chapter in our successful collaboration.
